Connolly, Jacobson & John, LLP, in conjunction with the Autism Society of Berks County, will be hosting a free IEP Clinic for parents of children with special needs on Saturday, April 28, 2012 from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm. At the start of the clinic, parents will have an opportunity to attend an approximately hour long presentation on determining IEP appropriateness. The presentation will provide valuable information on what provisions an appropriate IEP should include and the types of services your child may be entitled to, as well as IEP pitfalls to avoid.

During and after the presentation, parents will also have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with an attorney from CJ&J to discuss their child’s specific educational program – so don’t forget to bring your son or daughter’s most recent IEP and evaluation. Please note that attorney-parent meetings will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis – AVAILABILITY IS LIMITED.

The IEP Clinic will be held at the offices of the Autism Society of Berks County, located within the Century 21 Park Road Building, at 60 Commerce Drive, Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. Although pre-registration is not necessary for the IEP Clinic, due to limited space, and more importantly available attorney-parent meeting times, we strongly suggest that you register ahead of time. Please do so by contacting Theresa Wanner, at treeaw37@yahoo.com, being sure to let her know whether you also want to schedule a time to meet with an attorney.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to gain valuable IEP information and one-on-one time with a special education law attorney! Read More. . .

The attorneys at CJ&J recently obtained a nearly 2-year compensatory education award on behalf of an eleven year old student with autism in a Montgomery County school district. The hearing officer found that the school district failed to appropriately address the student’s significant behaviors until, among other things, it brought-in a trained and board certified behavioral specialist with an ABA focus and an ABA-trained one-to-one aide, resulting in hundreds of hours of compensatory education for the student.

Citing numerous implementation issues with the sometimes controversial No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), President Obama announced that States will now be permitted to apply for additional flexibility in meeting the NCLB accountability mandates. In a speech given on September 23rd, the President contended that although many goals of NCLB were admirable – such as higher education standards, closing the achievement gap, and overall school accountability – that the implementation of NCLB has also revealed some serious flaws. For example, the President noted that “[T]eachers too often are being forced to teach to the test. Subjects like history and science have been squeezed out. And in order to avoid having their schools labeled as failures, some states, perversely, have actually had to lower their standards in a race to the bottom instead of a Race to the Top. They don’t want to get penalized? Let’s make sure that the standards are so low that we’re not going to be seen failing to meet them. That makes no sense.”

According to President Obama, allowing States additional flexibility in meeting the requirements of NCLB does not mean that lower educational standards will be accepted, nor that accountability will be reduced. Additional information can be found at http://www.ed.gov/esea/flexibility
